What is surrogacy?
Surrogacy is an assisted reproduction technique in which a woman (the surrogate mother) carries the pregnancy of a person or couple to term who cannot do it on her own. This process offers invaluable hope for those who face significant challenges on their path to parenthood.

What is pregnancy by surrogacy?
Surrogacy pregnancy is an assisted reproduction process in which a woman, known as a surrogate, carries a pregnancy to term for another person or couple, called intended parents.
This method is used when intended parents are unable to carry a pregnancy for medical reasons, such as uterine problems, or personal reasons, such as same-sex couples or single people who want to have a biological child.
The process begins with the creation of embryos through in vitro fertilization (IVF), using eggs and sperm from intended parents or donors. The embryos are transferred to the uterus of the surrogate mother, who will carry the pregnancy to term.
What types of surrogacy are there and for whom is it recommended?
There are two main types of surrogacy: traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy.
In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate uses her own eggs, which means that she is biologically related to the baby. The sperm of the intended father or a donor is used to fertilize the surrogate mother’s egg through artificial insemination.
In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate has no biological link with the baby. Embryos are created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) using eggs and sperm from intended parents or donors, and then transferred to the surrogate’s uterus. This simplifies the legal and emotional aspects of the process, as the surrogate mother acts solely as the carrier of the pregnancy.
When to go to a surrogacy?
Surrogacy is an option for those individuals or couples who face significant obstacles to conceiving and carrying a pregnancy to term by traditional means. Some of the situations in which surrogacy may be considered include:
- Uterine medical problems: Congenital malformations, absence of uterus, or conditions that make pregnancy dangerous.
- Repeated IVF failures: Multiple failed cycles of in vitro fertilization.
- Genetic conditions: Risk of transmitting genetic diseases.
- Same-sex couples: Homosexual male couples who wish to have a biological child.
- Single people: Single men who want to have a biological child.
