Types of Artificial Insemination

The desire to be parents is a deeply human experience that, in some cases, can be challenged by fertility issues. For many individuals and couples, artificial insemination has become a valuable alternative to achieve that dream. However, the term “artificial insemination” encompasses several procedures, each with its particularities, advantages and challenges.

Knowing the differences between these methods can be critical to making an informed decision that fits your needs and circumstances.

Artificial insemination is a medical process that has evolved significantly over time. From the simplest to the most advanced techniques, the goal is always the same: to help sperm reach the egg as effectively as possible.

Depending on the specific situation of each person or couple, one type of insemination may be more suitable than another. At Fertivida, we know that every path to motherhood or parenthood is unique, and that’s why we offer a variety of services designed to meet each patient’s unique needs.

Types of artificial insemination according to the origin of the semen

Homologous insemination or with the partner’s sperm

In this type of artificial insemination, the sperm of the spouse or partner is used. It is a common option for heterosexual couples who face difficulties conceiving naturally, but in which the man’s semen is viable.

Semen preparation includes processing it in the laboratory to select the healthiest sperm and concentrate them, thus increasing the chances of success.

Insemination with partner sperm can be performed through different methods, such as intracervical insemination (ICI) or intrauterine insemination (IUI), depending on the specific needs of the case.

Heterologous or donor sperm insemination

When it is not possible to use the sperm of the male partner, either due to the absence of a male partner or due to severe problems in the quality of the sperm, donor sperm is used.

This sperm comes from sperm banks that guarantee the health and genetic quality of the donor through rigorous testing. This option is ideal for single women, same-sex couples, or heterosexual couples where the man is infertile.

As in partner sperm insemination, donor sperm can be used in different types of artificial insemination, such as ICI or IUI.

Types of artificial insemination according to the placement of the semen

Intracervical Insemination (ICI)

Intracervical insemination (ICI) is one of the simplest and least invasive techniques of artificial insemination. In this procedure, prepared semen is placed directly into the woman’s cervix using a syringe or a specialized device.

This method mimics the natural process of conception, where sperm swim from the cervix to the fallopian tubes. ICI is an affordable and less expensive option, but its success rate is generally lower than other more advanced methods, because it depends on the natural ability of sperm to reach the egg.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a more advanced technique and commonly used in fertility treatments. Unlike ICI, in IUI the semen is placed directly into the uterus, near the fallopian tubes.

This procedure allows a higher concentration of sperm to reach the tubes, thus increasing the chances of fertilization occurring. IUI is often combined with ovarian stimulation to optimize the chances of success.

This method is suitable for couples with unexplained infertility, mild problems with sperm count or motility, or for women using donor sperm.

Intrafallopian Artificial Insemination (ITI)

Intrafallopian insemination (ITI) is a less common and more invasive technique, in which semen is deposited directly into the fallopian tubes using a surgical procedure.

ITI may be considered in specific cases, such as when there are structural problems in the uterus that prevent IUI from being performed or when you want to maximize the closeness between the sperm and the egg. However, this method is less widely used due to its complexity and lower success rate compared to IUI.

Each method of artificial insemination offers unique advantages and challenges. Choosing the most appropriate method depends on factors such as the origin of the semen, the cause of infertility, the woman’s overall health, and personal preferences.
